In the past, sky lanterns were commonly used for celebrations and to remember loved ones. But a major drawback of this type of lantern is that it is not environmentally friendly and can litter the environment. These lanterns can also kill wildlife and are a fire hazard.
Instead, why not try a candle balloon? These are essentially a candle suspended inside an inverted paper bag. They often generate UFO reports and can travel up to a mile or more. Originally, these lanterns were used as part of certain Asian traditions and are now available commercially. However, people can easily make their own versions at home using common materials.
To make a candle balloon, first cut a piece of tissue paper that is approximately 12 inches square. Use a marker to mark four dots on the top of the paper, one inch away from each other. Make sure you do not touch the flames of the candles with your hand while doing this, and be careful not to burn yourself. Next, carefully melt the bottoms of each candle to stick it onto the dot. Use a lighter to do this. Keep a piece of plastic over the candle flames to avoid accidentally pushing the wax or burning the plastic and to keep the wind from blowing it away or collapsing the balloon completely.
