In ancient Japan, people would pass long evenings in the dark testing each other’s nerve with the game Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai – sharing tales of the ghostly and supernatural while snuffing out a candle after each story. Candle reimagines this tradition with gorgeous hand-painted visuals and an engrossing puzzle platformer that demands your full attention.
Using a single candle, players are placed in teams of two and must try to blow out their opponent’s candle without the other players noticing. Each player gets one turn, and a teammate can help by showing them which direction to blow. Then the next player takes their turn until everyone has had a chance to be a hero or be the victim.
When a hostile entity is near the player’s candle it will glow blue, presumably due to Guiding Light, and eventually blow out regardless of fuel, alerting the players that something is close by. This can help a player avoid Rush in The Greenhouse by allowing them to quickly hide by not being seen, and it can also be used to help a player know when Screech is nearby before it makes its “psst” noise.
Using a single candle, players try to tag each other while keeping the other players in sight. When a child is tagged they will hold their arms out and slowly melt toward the ground, but players can return them to the game by running under their arms before they melt away.
