Candle Vigil – What it is and Why You May Be Interested in It
A candle vigil or candle lit vigil is an evening gathering of those taking part in a candlelight vigil, usually held after dark so as to demonstrate support for a particular social cause. Such gatherings are usually held in memory of a deceased friend or family member, or to protest the daily sufferings of some victimized minority of folks. Candlelight vigils usually take place on public places such as roadsides or parks where large groups of individuals can be observed and joined together in an act of solidarity. However, there are other alternative venues where candlelit vigils can take place.
If you are planning on organizing a candle vigil feel free to contact a vigil organizer or volunteer if you have the time to travel. It’s also possible to arrange for a candle light dinner at a local restaurant. Depending on the community, you may want to check with the police about permission and regulations concerning candle lighting. In some cases businesses do not have the permission and authority to forbid candle light. If this is the case with your business, I would advise you to politely ask before lighting any candle lights.
If you choose to organize your own candle vigil, it is best to gather together as a unit with someone you know will remain calm during the entire demonstration. If you are planning on driving down a major street, it is important to ensure that you are using alternate routes. Some may even wish to find a store that does not allow candles or candle sales during the week so that no one has to pass by while demonstrating their belief in a social movement or charity. Some businesses will also provide a table for gathering to display handmade candles for sale.
