Candle Lanterns – A History of Illumination

The history of candle lanterns dates back to the American Civil War. These small hand-crafted lanterns were used to provide light in the battlefields and to keep troops from becoming lost in the darkness. During this time, lanterns would often be crafted by families from stained glasses or China to earn money for food or shelter. They were also passed down through generations of families as a family heirloom. The first lanterns were made with terracotta pots which were later changed to clay pots.

Stained glass candle lanterns are very pleasing to the eye. Many of these hand-crafted lanterns are exquisitely detailed with carvings, floral accents and even artistry in the artwork. There are even designs where the entire lamp is made out of stained glass and only the outside is lit up. Other styles include the Roman candle design, which has one lighted section that is wrapped around a column. These can either be plugged into an electrical outlet or simply hang from a nail or hook.

Because of their simplicity, many candle lanterns are passed down through the generations and are kept on hand as heirlooms. The only downside to these flameless candles is that they contain a moderate amount of carbon dioxide. It is recommended that you use an air cleaner, such as the oxygen-based filter mentioned above, whenever holding a candle over an open flame. Also, be sure not to hold these in places where there are pets or children around, as the fumes can prove harmful.
